In September 2015, 193 Member States of the United Nations adopted the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development at an historic UN Summit. At the core of the Agenda 2030: the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which officially came into force on 1 January 2016. The SDGs, also known as Global Goals, build on the success of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and aim to go further to end all forms of poverty over the next fifteen years and pursue a sustainable future.

While the SDGs are not legally binding, governments are expected to take ownership and establish national frameworks for the achievement of the 17 Goals. The new Goals are unique in that they call for action by all countries, poor, rich and middle-income to promote prosperity while protecting the planet.

Japan and Germany, two highly developed industrial countries, are predestined to take a leadership role in ending poverty by developing and implementing strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling also climate change and environmental protection.

Against this background the Japanese-German Center Berlin, the Asian Development Bank Institute and the Alumni Association of the German-Japanese Young Leaders Forum are hosting a symposium on "Implementation of the Agenda 2030 – Financial, Economic and Political Challenges". Aspects of financing Sustainable Development Goals as well as trade as a potential promoter of SDGs will be at the center of discussion. Representatives of Japanese and German companies will introduce the important role of the private sector in implementing SDGs.

It will be held at the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) on Friday 25 August 2017, from 14:00 -18:00 (Kasumigaseki Building 8F, ADBI Conference Room B&C, 3-2-5 Kasumigaseki, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-6008, Japan).
